INTRODUCTION:
XTANE 25MG contain exemestane which belongs to a group of medicine called aromatase inhibitors. It is used to treat hormone dependent early breast cancer in postmenopausal women after they have completed 2-3 years of treatment with the medicine tamoxifen and hormone dependent advanced breast cancer in postmenopausal women when a different hormonal drugs treatment has not worked well enough.
These medicines interfere with aromatase, which is needed to make the female sex hormones, oestrogens, especially in postmenopausal women. Reduction in oestrogen level in the body is a way of treating hormone dependent breast cancer. Cancer is a disease in which abnormal cell divide uncontrollably and destroy body tissue. Breast cancer is a disease in which cell in the breast grow out of control.
Always take XTANE 25MG exactly as your doctor has told you. This medicine must be taken after food. It is strictly not recommended for use in children and adolescents. Your doctor may perform some blood test to check for vitamin D level or bone density. Do not drive or operate machinery while taking this medicine, since it may cause dizziness, drowsiness, weakness. Before taking this medicine tell your doctor if you have ever had kidney disease, heart disease, or pancreas problems. Pregnant and breastfeeding women should consult their doctor before taking this medicine.
USES OF XTANE 25MG:
Treat hormone dependent early breast cancer in postmenopausal women after they have completed 2-3 years of treatment with the medicine tamoxifen
Treat hormone dependent advanced breast cancer in postmenopausal women when a different hormonal drugs treatment has not worked well enough
HOW XTANE 25MG WORKS:
XTANE 25MG works by lowering the amount of estrogen (natural female hormone) produced in the body. This can lower or stop the growth of some breast cancer cell that need estrogen to grow.
DIRECTIONS FOR USE:
Always take XTANE 25MG exactly as your doctor has told you. It must be taken after food. Try to take this medicine at the same time each day. It should be swallowed whole with water. Do not crush or chew the medicine.
SIDE EFFECTS OF XTANE 25MG:
SERIOUS
• Hypersensitivity reactions
• Inflammation of the liver and inflammation of the bile ducts of the liver which cause yellowing of the skin (cholestatic hepatitis)
Chest pain, heart failure, or stroke
COMMON
• Depression
• Difficulty sleeping
• Headache, dizziness, nausea, tiredness, vomiting
• Constipation, indigestion, diarrhoea
• Hot flushes
• Increased sweating
• Muscle and joint pain (including osteoarthritis, back pain, arthritis, and joint stiffness)
• Reduction in the number of white blood cell
• Abdominal pain
• Elevated level of liver enzymes
• Elevated levels of a haemoglobin breakdown in the blood
• Elevated levels of a blood enzyme in the blood due to liver damage
• Loss of appetite
• Carpal tunnel syndrome (a combination of pins and needles, numbness and pain affecting all of the hand except the little finger) or tingling/prickling of the skin
• Hair loss
• Skin rash, hives, and itchiness
• Thinning of bone which might decrease their strength (osteoporosis), leading to bone fractures (breaks or cracks) in some cases
• Swollen hands and feet

RARE
• Breakout of small blisters on an area of the skin in a rash
• Drowsiness
HOW TO MANAGE SIDE EFFECTS:
Headache:
Apply hot or cold-water bag on your head. Take rest in a quiet and dark room. Drink tea or coffee.
Dizziness:
Get up and move around to feel awake, take small naps to edge off the sleepiness. Give your eyes a break to avoid fatigue and eat a healthy food to boost energy.
Nausea and vomiting:
Keep try taking this medicine with, or just after, a meal or snack and stick to simple meals and do not eat rich or spicy food.
Abdominal pain:
Keep try to rest and relax. eat and drink slowly and smaller and frequent meals. Applying a heat pad or covered hot water bottle on your stomach may also help. If still pain persists, speak to your doctor.
Constipation:
Take fibre rich foods such as fresh fruit, vegetables and cereals, and drink plenty of water. Exercise more regularly.
Diarrhoea:
Drink lot of fluid such as water or squash, to avoid dehydration. Do not take any other medicine without talking to a doctor.

XTANE 25MG is not recommended for use in pregnant women unless necessary. Discuss the risks and benefits with your doctor.
BREASTFEEDING
XTANE 25MG is not recommended for use in breastfeeding women unless necessary. Discuss the risks and benefits with your doctor.
DRIVING AND USING MACHINES
Do not drive or operate machinery while taking this medicine, since it may cause dizziness, drowsiness, weakness.
ALCOHOL
Consumption of alcohol is not recommended during treatment with XTANE 25MG.
KIDNEY
XTANE 25MG should be used with caution in patients suffering from active kidney diseases. Consult your doctor for advice.
LIVER
XTANE 25MG should be used with caution in patients suffering from liver function impairment or active liver diseases. Consult your doctor for advice.
ALLERGY
Do not take XTANE 25MG if you are allergic (hypersensitive) to exemestane or any other ingredients in this medicine.
OTHERS
Tell your doctor, if you:
Have not attained menopause (you are still having your monthly period)
Have a history or are suffering from any condition which affects the strength of your bones
INTERACTIONS:
Talk to your doctor if you are taking,
Antibiotic such as rifampicin (used to treat infection)
Anticonvulsants such as carbamazepine, phenytoin, phenobarbital (used to treat epilepsy)
Herbal medicine such as St John?s Wort (Hypericum perforatum) (used to treat depression and general inflammation)
