WHAT IS LARETOL?
LARETOL contains Calcitriol which belongs to a group of medicines known as ?Vitamin D metabolites?
Calcitriol is an active form of Vitamin D3
WHAT LARETOL IS USED FOR?
LARETOL is used to:
Treat the calcium level imbalance in the blood in people who are having renal dialysis
Treat hyperparathyroidism in patients receiving renal dialysis
WARNING AND PRECAUTIONS:
TALK TO DOCTOR
Talk to your Doctor before taking LARETOL, if you:
Are allergic to Calcitriol or to any of the ingredients in this medicine
Have a high level of calcium in your blood (hypercalcaemia)
Have or have had a transplant
Have problems with your bones e.g. osteoporosis
Are planned for surgery
Are about to have any blood tests
PREGNANCY & BREAST FEEDING
If you are pregnant or breast-feeding, think you may be pregnant or are planning to have a baby, ask your doctor for advice before taking this medicine
INTERACTIONS:
Tell your doctor if you are taking,
Other vitamins or supplements
Magnesium containing antacids (medicines to treat heartburn and indigestion)
Medicines containing Vitamin D or vitamin D analogues (eg. ergocalciferol and cholecalciferol)
Cardiac glycosides (medicines used to treat heart failure eg. Digitalis)
Barbiturates and anticonvulsant (medicines used to treat epilepsy)
Corticosteroids – prednisone and cortisone (used to relieve inflammation)
Diuretics (used to treat high blood pressure or kidney problems)
DIRECTIONS & FOR USE:
LARETOL will always be given to you by your doctor or nurse
The injection will be given intravenously
The usual recommended dose is administered three times weekly, approximately every other day
SIDE EFFECTS OF LARETOL INJECTION 1ML:
SERIOUS
• Like all medicines, LARETOL can cause side effects, although not everybody gets them
• If any of the side effects gets serious, or if you notice any side effect not listed below, please tell your doctor immediately
• Skin rash or hives
• Shortness of breath
• Swelling of the face, lips or tongue which may cause difficulty in swallowing or breathing
COMMON
• Like all medicines, LARETOL can cause side effects, although not everybody gets them
• If any of the side effects gets serious, or if you notice any side effect not listed below, please tell your doctor immediately
• Headache, sleepiness
• Nausea, vomiting
• Constipation, stomach pain
• Muscle or bone pain, feeling tired or weak
• Metallic taste, dry mouth
• Excessive thirst needs to urinate during the night or pass more urine than normal
• Conjunctivitis, sensitivity to light or changes in vision
• Running nose, itchy rash
• High body temperature
• Decreased sexual drive
• Irregular heart beat
• Urinary tract infections
• High blood pressure (hypertension)
• Weight loss, anorexia
STORAGE:
Keep out of reach of children
Do not use after the expiry date
Store at room temperature (15-25?C)
