INTRODUCTION
INDOCAP SR 75MG contains Indomethacin which belongs to the group of medicines called non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAID). It is used to relieve pain in inflammatory conditions such as rheumatoid arthritis, osteoarthritis, degenerative hip disease, lower back pain and ankylosing spondylitis (pain and stiffness in backbone). It can also be used to relieve pain caused by gout, sprains and strains, muscle or bone surgery or menstruation.
Indomethacin has both analgesic and anti-inflammatory activities. It acts by inhibiting the release of certain inflammatory mediators that cause pain, inflammation, redness and swelling. This medicine has to be taken with meals. Avoid smoking and alcohol consumption while taking this medicine as it may worsen your existing condition.
During the course of the therapy, your doctor may carry out several test to monitor your liver and kidney function, blood count, eyesight and stomach and intestine to avoid the risk of side effects. Avoid concomitant use of this medicine with mifepristone (abortion pill). The most common side effects of this medicine are nausea, vomiting, stomach pain, indigestion, skin rash, headache and dizziness. Contact your doctor if any of these symptoms bothers you.
Before taking this medicine, inform your doctor if you have or have had a history of gastrointestinal problems such as peptic ulcer, GI bleeding, Crohn’s disease or ulcerative colitis. Your doctor might prescribe a suitable dose for you depending upon your condition. INDOCAP SR 75MG should be used with caution in elderly patients and in patients with liver, kidney or heart disease. It is strictly not recommended for use in pregnant (especially during last 3 months) or breastfeeding women and in children. Consult your doctor before taking.

HOW INDOCAP SR 75MG WORKS
Indomethacin is a potent cyclooxygenase-1 (COX-1) inhibitor. It exerts anti-inflammatory actions by inhibiting the enzyme cyclooxygenase-1 thereby, blocking the release of prostaglandins and other chemical mediators that cause pain, inflammation and swelling.
DIRECTIONS FOR USE
Take INDOCAP SR 75MG as directed by your physician. It must be taken with or immediately after meals. It can also be taken with milk or antacids to avoid side effects such as indigestion. Swallow the medicine as whole with a sip of water. Do not crush or chew the medicine. Your doctor will decide the correct dose for you depending upon your condition. Continue to take this medicine, as long as your doctor tells you to do so, to obtain better results.
SIDE EFFECTS OF INDOCAP SR 75MG
SERIOUS
- Signs of GI bleeding (blood in stools, black tarry stools, vomiting blood or dark particles that look like coffee grounds)
- Signs of an allergic reaction (swelling of the face, lips, tongue or throat, difficulty in breathing or swallowing, asthma and sudden decrease in blood pressure)
COMMON
- Stomach pain, heartburn or indigestion
- Nausea or vomiting
- Bloating, diarrhea or constipation
- Inflammation of GI tract, GI bleeding
- Jaundice (yellowing of skin or whites of eyes)
- Hepatitis (inflammation of the liver)
- Skin rash, itching, redness, peeling, bruising
- Blurred vision
- Ringing in the ears
- Unusual bleeding or bruising
- High blood sugar levels
- Headache, dizziness, vertigo, tiredness, drowsiness
- Depression, confusion, hallucinations or anxiety
- Fits or seizures
- Paresthesia (numbness of hands and feet)
- Fluid retention (edema), chest pain, irregular heartbeat
- Blood in urine
- Unusual vaginal bleeding
- Breast enlargement in both men and women
HOW TO MANAGE SIDE EFFECTS
Nausea or vomiting:
Try taking this medicine with, or just after meals. Stick to simple meals. Do not eat rich or spicy food.
Bloating or wind:
Eat smaller and frequent meals. Eat and drink slowly, and exercise regularly. If the symptoms get worse, contact your doctor immediately.
Constipation:
Eat fibre rich foods like fresh fruit, vegetables and cereals. Drink plenty of water. Exercise more regularly.
Diarrhea:
Drink lots of fluids, such as water or juice, to avoid dehydration. Do not take any medicines without speaking to a doctor.
Stomach pain:
Try to rest and relax. You can eat and drink slowly or have smaller and frequent meals. Keeping a heat pad on your stomach may also help. If still pain persists, speak to your doctor.
Skin rash:
Avoid hot showers because hot water can irritate the skin. Do not rub or scratch the affected area. Use sunscreen and protective clothing when outdoors. Regularly use moisturizers to soothe and hydrate the affected area. If it does not get better, speak to a doctor.
Headache:
Apply hot or cold-water bag on your head. Take rest in a quiet and dark room. Drink tea or coffee.
Dizziness or drowsiness:
Try to rest and relax. Get enough sleep. Avoid traveling, driving or operating any tools or machines while you are feeling dizzy. If the symptom still persists, contact your doctor for advice.

DRIVING AND USING MACHINES
Do not drive or operate any machines, because this medicine may cause drowsiness, dizziness or vision problems.
ALCOHOL
Avoid consumption of alcohol while taking this medicine.
KIDNEY
INDOCAP SR 75MG should be taken with caution in patients with kidney disease. Consult your doctor for advice.
LIVER
INDOCAP SR 75MG should be taken with caution in patients with liver disease. Consult your doctor for advice.
ALLERGY
Do not take this medicine if you are allergic to indomethacin or other similar NSAIDS (aspirin, ibuprofen).
LUNGS

HEART DISEASE
INDOCAP SR 75MG should be taken with caution in patients with heart disease such as high blood pressure or congestive heart failure. Consult your doctor for advice.
OTHERS
Before taking this medicine, inform your doctor if you:
- Are elderly (aged 65 years and above)
- Are going to have any vaccination
- Have bleeding or blood clotting disorder
- Have any mental illness
- Have epilepsy
- Have Parkinson’s Disease (tremor, stiffness and rigidity)
- Have an infection or sepsis
- Have fluid retention (edema caused due to heart or kidney problems)
- Have or have a history of bowel diseases (such as Crohn’s disease or ulcerative colitis)
- Have systemic lupus erythematosus (an allergic skin reaction) or other connective tissue disorders
- Have diabetes
- Have extracellular volume depletion (reduced amount of fluid around the cells of the body
- Have peripheral arterial disease (problem with blood circulation of the legs)
- Are going to have or recently had any surgery
INTERACTIONS
Talk to your doctor, if you are taking,
- Other non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (such as aspirin, naproxen or COX-II inhibitors (e.g. celecoxib) or diflunisal)
- Medicines used for blood thinning (e.g. warfarin or clopidogrel)
- Medicines used to treat depression (e.g. fluoxetine)
- Medicines used to treat diabetes (e.g. metformin, gliclazide or glibenclamide)
- Medicines used to treat high blood pressure such as alpha blockers (e.g. prazosin), beta blockers (e.g. atenolol), ACE inhibitors (e.g. lisinopril), angiotensin II receptor antagonists (e.g. valsartan), hydralazine or nifedipine
- Medicines used to treat HIV infection (e.g. zalcitabine, zidovudine or ritonavir)
- Medicines used to suppress immune system and prevent graft rejection (e.g. ciclosporin, tacrolimus or muromonab-CD3)
- Medicines used to treat stomach acid and heartburn (e.g. aluminium hydroxide, magnesium hydroxide)
- Quinolone antibiotics (used to treat bacterial infections) e.g. ciprofloxacin
- Phenytoin (used to treat epilepsy)
- Diazepam (a medicine used to treat anxiety, alcohol withdrawal, seizures and muscle spasm)
