INTRODUCTION
TEGRITAL 100 MG contains Carbamazepine which belongs to the group of medicines called Anticonvulsant. It is used to treat certain forms of epilepsy (fits or seizures) and trigeminal neuralgia (painful condition of the face). It can also be used to control the symptoms of bipolar disorder if other medicines are not effective. Bipolar disorder (also known as manic depression) is a mental disorder characterized by alternative episodes of mania (sudden unusual extreme sense of happiness) and depression.
Carbamazepine controls seizure (fits) by reducing the abnormal activity of the nerve cells in the brain. It also reduces pain by blocking the transmission of pain signals across the nervous system. It can stabilize You’re mood by reducing the activation of nerve cells at certain regions of the brain that causes abnormal mood changes. During and prior to the treatment, You’re doctor would recommend you several blood tests to understand You’re existing condition.
Before taking TEGRITAL 100 MG inform You’re doctor if you have any liver or kidney diseases. TEGRITAL 100 MG is not recommended for use in patients who have or ever had porphyria (a blood disorder), any heart problems, or problems in bone marrow. Avoid consumption of alcohol or grapefruit juice while taking TEGRITAL 100 MG as it may lead to unwanted side effects.
TEGRITAL 100 MG should be used in pregnant and breastfeeding women only if it is considered necessary by the physician. It is not recommended for use in children aged below 5 years. The most common side effects of taking TEGRITAL 100 MG are nausea, vomiting, increased bleeding tendency, headache, weight gain, dizziness, and blurred vision. SIDE EFFECTS OF TEGRITAL 100 MG
COMMON
- Reduced WBC count causing frequent infections
- Dizziness, tiredness, losing balance, nausea, or vomiting
- Abnormal bleeding and bruising
- Fluid retention and swelling
- Weight gain
UNCOMMON
- Abnormal uncontrollable body movements including tremor or tics
- Abnormal eye movements
- Diarrhoea and constipation
RARE
- Disorders of lymph glands
- Increased blood pressure (which may make you feel dizzy, with a flushed face, headache, fatigue, and nervousness)
- Hallucinations, confusion, restlessness, depression, anxiety, and loss of appetite
- Abnormalities in speech
- Numbness and tingling of hands and feet
- Muscle weakness
Stop taking TEGRITAL 100 MG and contact You’re doctor immediately if you experience any of the following side effects:
- Serious skin reactions such as Stevens-Johnson syndrome or toxic epidermal necrolysis (skin rash with widespread blistering and peeling of the skin, ulcerations in the mouth, throat, nose, genitals, and eyes, fever, flu-like symptoms, headache, and body ache) or lupus erythematosus (rash across the bridge of nose and cheeks with painful joints and muscles)
- Suicidal thoughts (thoughts of harming or killing themselves)
- Fall due to dizziness, drowsiness, decreased blood pressure and confusion
- Signs of severe allergic reactions (such as skin rash, itching, swelling of face especially lips, throat, mouth, and eyes causing difficulty in breathing)
- Stomach pain
HOW TO MANAGE SIDE EFFECTS
Nausea and Vomiting:
Take TEGRITAL 100 MG with or just after meals. Stick to simple meals. Avoid eating oil rich or spicy foods. Consult You’re doctor if You’re nausea worsens.
Diarrhea:
Hydrate You’re self by drinking plenty of fluids, such as water or fruit juices. Consuming ORS can also be beneficial. Do not self-treat diarrhea on You’re own. Consult You’re doctor if You’re diarrhea becomes uncontrollable.
Headache:
Rest and relax. Keep You’re self hydrated by drinking plenty of fluids such as water or electrolytes. Applying a pain-relieving balm on You’re forehead can be beneficial. Do not consume excessive alcohol, as it could aggravate You’re headache. Consult You’re doctor if You’re headache worsens.
Dizziness:
Try to rest and relax. Get enough sleep. Avoid driving or operating any tools or machines completely while you are feeling dizzy. Do not consume excessive alcohol, as it could aggravate You’re dizziness. Consult You’re doctor if You’re dizziness worsens.
Constipation:
Eat plenty of fiber rich foods such as fresh fruits, vegetables, and cereals. Drink plenty of fluids. Exercise more regularly. Consult You’re doctor if this side effect bothers you.
WARNING & PRECAUTIONS
PREGNANCY
TEGRITAL 100 MG should not be used in pregnant women unless considered necessary by the physician. Therefore, consult You’re doctor before taking. It is also not recommended for use in women who are planning to become pregnant. Women of childbearing potential should use a suitable non-hormonal contraceptive method to avoid pregnancy while undergoing therapy with TEGRITAL 100 MG.
BREASTFEEDING
TEGRITAL 100 MG should be used with caution in breastfeeding women, as it may pass through breast milk and cause certain side effects in the breastfeeding infant. Therefore, consult You’re doctor before taking.
DRIVING AND USING MACHINES
Do not drive or operate any heavy tools or machines if you experience dizziness, drowsiness or blurred vision after taking TEGRITAL 100 MG.
ALCOHOL

KIDNEY

ALLERGY
Do not take TEGRITAL 100 MG if you are allergic to carbamazepine or similar medicines such as oxcarbazepine, phenytoin, primidone, phenobarbital, or antidepressants (such as amitriptyline or imipramine).
HEART DISEASE
TEGRITAL 100 MG is not recommended for use in patients having heart diseases. Therefore, consult You’re doctor before taking it.
OTHERS
TEGRITAL 100 MG is not recommended for use if you:
- Have ever had any bone marrow disorders
- Have porphyria (a blood disorder)

- Have any mental illness
